See more Trains. See best of Mérida in Mexico.

Two different kinds of civilisations collide on the Espreso Maya train route. The ancient Mayan civilisations the highlights of which the train drops in at and the kind of civilised you only get on those old fashioned trains with café, restaurant and library carriages. Villahermosa, Campeche, Mérida, Palenque, Uxmal and Chichén Itzá are the main stations. It’s a two day trip but there are no sleeper cars so you have to tie your journey in with hotels, but its 25 mile an hour pace is a good way to see with countryside as well as the destinations on the itinerary.

Lectures by local professors and specialists will have you taking the theme more seriously than the décor would first have you believe, it’s slightly over the top.
