Home to the Sami people, the Laponian Area is a large, untouched region in Sweden’s mountainous north. The Samis manage the land in the same way they have for hundreds of years, their main industry is herding reindeer which they move seasonally, maintaining the patterns of grazing that has shaped this landscape over generations. The best place for visitors to stay when visiting this region is at Jokkmokk, just north of the Arctic Circle, and the best time is February when the Sami hold their ‘Great Winter Market’ a four centuries old tradition. The Jokkmokk - Åjtte is the main museum housing Sami artefacts.
