Skilled artisans known for their use of natural materials, the Ticuna excel at basketry, mask making, and wood and stone carving. The bark cloth made doubles as both a fabric and a canvas, as well as being used in the making of dolls and masks. The Ticuna are one of the few Amazonian groups to paint purely for the aesthetics, rather than to convey a specific cultural meaning. Ticuna culture is also very rich in ceremonies and rituals, which commemorate many facets of life. Inhabiting the north-eastern Amazon River region, from Chimbote in Peru to San Antonio do Iça in Brazil, the Ticuna (also known as Tikuna or Tukuna) are one of the largest remaining indigenous populations in the Amazon Rainforest. Due to their wide-spread habitat, the Ticuna are among the better accessed indigenous groups living within the area.
