Perching, half flooded, on an island in a river, this town is home to several celebrated Hindu monuments. The most famous of these is the 9th Century temple dedicated to Rangagathaswamy, a form of Vishnu, which dominates the town. The town also has an important mosque. It is the river, consecrated in ancient times which has dictated the sacredness of this spot and there are also large temples on two nearby islands. Birds also visit for the river, storks, terns, plovers, shags and ibis flock here to feed and a bird sanctuary has opened on the island. Easy to get to from either Bangalore or Mysore.
