Wat Pho’s best known artefact is it’s golden, 46m long reclining statue of Buddha, but it is also the largest and oldest Wat in Bangkok and has the largest number of Buddhas in any Thai temple, more than 100 images. On the Reclining Buddha’s feet are mother of pearl plaques depicting Chinese and Indian mythology. The north section of the complex has the main treasures, many from the ancient Thai capitals of Ayuthaya and Sukhothai. This version of the complex was built around 1788 on top of an earlier temple. Wat Pho was Thailand’s first university and one of the places where traditional Thai massage was developed. You can still get a massage, even better though, you can get a massage in a room carved with all the secrets of Thai massage carved into the walls beside statues in yoga poses.
