Gol Gumbaz

See more Tombs & Memorials. See best of Bijapur in India.

Gol Gumbaz is probably more famous for its monumental architecture and marvelous acoustics than for the man who is buried there. Built for Muhammad Adil Shah in the 17th century, the mausoleum’s dome is second in size only to St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The unique structure of the building has resulted in the legendary Whispering Gallery, a phenomenon that enables any sounds uttered to be heard perfectly on the diagonally opposite side of the building and echoed ten times over.
