Choeung Ek was one of the Khmer Rouge’s Killing Fields. This spot, once an orchard, just south of Phnom Penh witnessed the execution and mass burial of around 9,000 people between 1975 and 79. The grim memorials are a clear Perspex Buddhist temple containing more than 5,000 recovered skulls, the empty pits where the bodies were found where you can still find bits and pieces of human bone and the Chankiri Trees which small children were mashed against until they died. You might think that the Cambodian people would want to keep people away from this place but the government encourages visitors. I guess they want people to know what happened.
