One of Sofia's most famous monuments, Alexander Nevski Church was finished in the early 1900s. This church honours the Russians who died trying to free Bulgaria from the Ottoman rule during the War of Liberation in 1878. Its name comes from prince Alexander Nevski, leader of that army. The crypt also displays Bulgarian artefacts dating from the 9th to 18th centuries.
