The Pura Luhar are Bali’s ‘high temples’ – the most important and sacred places on the island. Uluwatu is one of the oldest Pura Luhar on Bali, and is perched on a cliff-top at the island’s most south-westerly point. Built to protect the island from the evil spirits of the ocean, the temple presides over a 250 foot cliff drop and the tumultuous waters beneath. It’s possible – and highly recommended – to watch the sunset from the temple, and there are traditional Kecak dance performances at around 5pm every day. There’s also a lively babble of monkeys roaming around the temple complex – they’re interesting to look at, but keep your sunglasses in your pocket and a tight grip on your camera.
