Possibly the finest piece of temple architecture from the Solanki dynasty, a high point in western Indian art and culture, the Sun Temple at Modhera is certainly an imposing building. Constructed in the 11th century with the use of donated funds, it was designed in honour of the Sun God.
The approach presents a huge portico mounted on 52 pillars and topped with rows of carved, stone arches either side of an immense main entrance archway and although it is in ruins, its erotic carvings and intricately cut columns ravaged by time to a crumbling, sandy yellow, it is still a wonderful representation of how worship took place a thousand years ago. The pillars are arranged so that rays of sunlight reach different places in the inner sanctum at dawn during different seasons, so marking the equinoxes, and there are more than a hundred separate, small shrines inside.
