The Jagannath Temple

See more Temples. See best of Puri in India.

Lord Jagannath is believed, in the Hindu religion, to be the mightiest yet gentlest form of Krishna – the abstract lord of the universe. Worship of Krishna in this form is one of the oldest Hindu traditions on record and it is here in Puri that it is centralised, in the form of the glorious Jagannath Temple. A focus for pilgrims and tourists alike, the interior is nevertheless out of bounds to non-Hindus, so the wealth of relief carvings and deities within its imposing wall can only be imagined by many. The main temple stands at 214 feet and is surrounded by more than a hundred other, smaller shrines of varying designs, creating a mysterious field of pyramids, peaks and towers.

Only in early summer can an outsider experience a little of the euphoria with which Lord Jagannath’s presence is celebrated, when the festival of Rath Yatra (meaning ‘the journey of the chariots’) is held in Puri, to mark the deity’s return home.
