Kom Ombo is unique in that it has an unusual ground plan, unifying two adjacent temples. One is dedicated to the crocodile-headed Sobek, god of fertility and creator of the world, the other to the falcon-headed Horace (an aspect of Horus), the solar war god. It is fronted by 16 columns that guard the courtyard, upon which can be found beautifully preserved hieroglyphics, with depictions of the pharaoh accompanied by gods. The frescoes on the outside of the sanctum show medical instruments and live amulets. Also there is the chapel of Hathor, goddess of the heavens and provider of growth, love and fertility.
