My Son Sanctuary

See more Temples. Near to Tam Ky (10.67 km) in Vietnam.

An incomparable monument to the unique Hindu Champa dynasty, which grew on the Vietnam coast from the 4th Century, this temple complex is one of individuality and rare beauty. It was once a dense collection of 78 tall towers, each built in deference to a Hindu deity, but much of it has been destroyed by war, neglect and time. Chunks of beautiful, crumbling, rust-coloured brickwork pierce the undergrowth and the 25 nearly-whole towers which remain are half-concealed by tangled foliage. However, the site is still overwhelmingly evocative and there is a desperate effort under way to conserve what is left of the site.
