Kapaleeswarar Temple

See more Temples. See best of Chennai in India.

A flat topped pyramid of colourful stone relief, the Kapaleeshwarar temple rises over seven storeys of intricately carved deities and dramas, the most important depicting a peacock, referring to the story of the temple’s construction. Inside is a small courtyard with an ancient Punnai tree. Lining an outer court yard are 63 bronze statues to Shiva saints an integral part of the temples annual cycle of festivities. Originally a 7th Century Shiva temple, Kapaleeshwarar was destroyed by the Portuguese and re-built as a church, then again as a Hindu temple. The current structure dates from the 16th Century.
