A surreal mixture of modern and ancient buildings gathered around the foothills of the Taebaek Mountains, Gyeongju is bordered to the east by the Sea of Japan and occupies the site of the ancient South Korean civilization of Silla. Several sites across the city bear testament to the rule of this powerful kingdom between the 7th and 9th Centuries. The Hwangnyongsa Temple is one, the largest ever built in Korea, originally nine stories high. The Bunhwangsa Temple stands nearby, the oldest in the area and the source of many ancient royal artefacts. Over a hundred others are to be found on the site, many still in use and home to some wonderful Buddhist artworks.
