Gunung Kawi

See more Temples. Near to Denpasar (17.55 km) in Indonesia.

Set among fields of rice paddies, the 11th century temple complex Gunang Kawi is a haven of tranquility. Hundreds of years ago, it is thought that devotees of King Anak Wungsu and his many concubines carved a collection of monuments into the rocky cliff sides of Bali’s town of Ubud. Buddhist monks inhabited the ancient temple for some time, but now it is open to inquisitive travelers.
