This monastery is one of the three largest and most important Buddhist centres in Mongolia. While many monasteries were decimated in the Communist purges in 1937, many of Amarbayasgalant’s statues and manuscripts were hidden and most of the building survived. Amarbayasgalant looks Chinese in style, its layout very symmetrical and centred around a courtyard and the orange pillared main buildings line up north to south and subsidiary buildings east to west.
