Surfing J Bay (Jeffreys Bay or Jeffreysbaai)
See more Surfing. See best of Eastern Cape in South Africa.
‘One of the world's best right hand point breaks’The main break is one of the best right hand point breaks in the world, if not the best. Suitable equally for long and short boarders, it holds size and sometimes gets up to 10' plus. Waves break with few sections and are makeable. Suits intermediate and upwards. However crowds are again a problem when the surf is good, which is fairly often. Nearby is Supertubes, another right hander, but much faster (and shorter) and only for experts surfers, particularly in view of the crowds and the competition for waves.

Review by expert member ‘Supertubes’Home to the Billabong Pro in July, Supertubes goes off when it is working and has to be one of the world’s best surf spots. On a big southerly swell and a westerly wind you can expect to get a very long (300m ish), very fast, hollow (as in tubes) right hand point break which is one of the world’s most perfectly formed waves. People watch this wave on the internet and drool that’s how good it is. “In season” here is in winter between the end of May and the end of August. Prime time it is crowded - naturally with the kind of reputation Jeffreys Bay has, but at least if you get pushed out you can watch the best and watch the big waves come in. If you are up to it you need a big board. You can make do with a 3mm wetsuit but the water is pretty chilly.
