Lots of you will already know Durban is a great place for surfers. My personal favourite place to surf there is at New Pier. A fast hollow right, best at low tide when it’s really hollow, and a slightly smaller left, New Pier has a sandy bottom and super easy access - like it’s just off the main prom road and there is heaps of parking, you need to tip the parking guards. This is a good spot for experienced surfers on a good day you‘re looking at 200 -250m rides on up to 4m swell. On a small day you can paddle off the beach but on a bigger day people go off the end of the pier and it’ll be a big heavy ride. Depending on what you’re used to it may be a bit of a paddle marathon between sets. Localism, especially at the weekend is a bit of an issue but if you go early in the morning you’ll have plenty of space and if you’re already there people tend to do less of the elbowing, but visitors are expected to sit wide.
