The Canadian Museum of Civilisation (CMC) does just what its name suggests: collects and preserves artefacts that reflect and illuminate the history of human civilisation in Canada over the past 20,000 years. The largest exhibitions are about the original inhabitants and their culture and crafts from the beginning of their history up until the arrival of the Vikings followed by other Europeans. Special focus is made on the past 1000 years since the arrival of the Vikings and the way aboriginal people have adapted. A museum theatre company help bring the exhibitions to life thorough re-enactments, short plays and improvisations. As well as the permanent exhibitions the CMC has temporary exhibitions on related themes, particular crafts, such as ceramics, the natural wonders of Canada’s environment and famous Canadians. Many of Canada’s national treasures are part of the collection. Their website has some very cool virtual exhibits you han check out on line. The CMC buildings, known for their modern domes, also house the Canadian Children’s Museum, the Canadian Postal Museum and an IMAX cinema and are Canada’s most popular (in visitor numbers) museum.
