Lots of spas claim to offer something really unique, but the natural spa resort of Grotta Giusti isn’t just the usual pampering Paradise on earth – it’s Purgatory, Hell and Limbo too. Doesn’t sound quite what you’re after? Fear not for your immortal soul; these are just names for the different degrees of heat to be found in Tuscany’s unique underground ‘natural sauna’. It was discovered by the Giusti family in 1849 when miners working on their property found hot steam bursting out of a gap in the rocks. They enlarged the gap so it was big enough to climb inside, and discovered a mini cathedral of stalagtites dripping with mineral-rich, therapeutic waters.
Today its ancient walls are lined with warm, wooden steamer chairs draped in fluffy, white towels, ready to welcome those prone to skin and respiratory problems or anyone who needs a peaceful, warming detox.
The adjacent hotel spa with its thermal pool, long list of beauty therapies, yoga classes, shiatsu sessions, fine Tuscan dining and elegant accommodation is also worth far more than a flying visit.
