The big one here is Grand Montet, but the really big backdrop is Mont Blanc, which is what makes this a famous resort for anyone who loves snow and winter and alpine scenery. For such a big name ski destination the pistes are a bit rough, but for many boarders that’s a draw, and the off piste is probably some of the best in Europe, especially round Flegere, you’ve got loads of space and potential terrain. There’s a snow park and pipes as well but this is more a freeriders haven. Vallee Blanche is fantastic, it’s all crevasses and steep slopes, pick up a guide round the bars to take you out to one of the more remote places. In fact get a guide a few days and you’ll have a better time. Best for people with a few outings under their belt, there’s good easier slopes but not much smooth stuff for beginners. For the cheapest deals get a Chamski Pass, you need a passport photo and trust me it’s tricky to scan the one out of your passport so take a spare if you have it – those little blighters can be a pain to get hold of. It gets you access to all the lifts and to the buses free. You see people going out with ropes, meaning they’re going to have a go at some of the highest slopes, some of them you even have to climb up to get to , but the views of the glaciers are like nothing else, so like I say if it’s about the scenery this is the one for you. The town is a proper town not just a resort. People come to see the mountain all year, which means that there are proper shops and not everything is at French Ski Resort prices, but then it’s not really a ‘proper’ resort so if you’re after après ski then you’ll be disappointed.
