Colonial splendour meets ancient charm: this heritage hotel is a blissfully tranquil retreat, yet right in the heart of Trivandrum Built in the 1850s by an English memsahib who followed her heart to India to marry a colonial tea planter, this spacious bungalow brims with old-world charm. Airy rooms are decorated with rosewood antiques, high wood-panelled ceilings, display cabinets of family treasures, old lamps and sepia photographs. The welcome from Colonel Kuncheira (ex-Ghurkha Rifles) and his wife, whose family have owned the house since the departure of Miss Blanket and her beau, is second to none; and the spicy Keralan dinners are as authentic as you can get (the chef will even share his recipes). Around the house runs a wide verandah, looking onto verdant gardens with a badminton court shaded by tall trees, and lush lawns whose pathways are lit at night. Step outside and you're in the midst of bustling Trivandrum, with temples, the Zoological Gardens, a Fair Trade craft market and Kanaka Kunnu Palace on your doorstep. Varikatt is an oasis of calm at its centre. read more and book at i-escape
