It’s ten out of ten on all counts at one of England’s loveliest country inns, an hour’s drive south of London This is an ancient village. Simon de Montfort passed though in 1264. He was on his way to the Battle of Lewes, where he defeated Henry III. He kept his men down by the Norman church for an all-night vigil, and Fletching gets its name from the soldiers who sat by camp fires that night sharpening their arrows. As for the Griffin – well, it has been serving ale here for 400 years, oblivious to the follies of would-be kings. In-house concerns focus more on the temperature of the cask ales and the fortunes of their cricket teams (the pub has two). The locals seem to like it that way. Turn up before opening time and you’ll find them queuing to get in. There is good reason for this: ancient beams, six open fires, good beer, oak panelling and the tiny club room, where they watch the racing on Saturdays. This is the hub of a local community, and part of the charm is the way things are done; with kindness. The pub itself has been allowed to age. The odd sign of scruffiness is not swooped on by the nearest interior designer, but rather it is quietly championed for its services to authenticity. Not that you should infer that the Griffin is unkempt. Far from it. This is a smart little place with bags of style and if you like inns you’ll be in heaven.
