Samui's only design hotel, at one end of Chaweng's still-superlative beach, combines Oriental minimalism with Thai grace Drive past it on the busy road through Chaweng and you could be forgiven for thinking this was a state school rather than a pioneering design hotel. But step through the concrete-stilted foyer into the court, where tall palms sway gracefully above green lawns and a black-tiled pool, and petite Thai girls swish smilingly past without a bead of sweat on their elegant silk uniforms, and you begin to see what all the fuss is about. Or rather the lack of fuss, that much sought-after jai yen ('cool heart'). In front of you, two low concrete wings stretch towards the white strip of Chaweng beach. After the claustrophobic bustle of town, it is an oasis of calm and spaciousness. Step inside the bedroom and your jai yen is fully restored: smooth woods, low beds, cream walls and a cleansing aroma of eucalyptus blend in a paradigm of air-conditioned Oriental minimalism. But before you chill out completely, check out the private beachside pavilions, where funky fusion dinners are served to the ripple of Thai music. This place is cool, without a doubt, but it also has a heart. read more and book at i-escape
