‘Zermatt’This is what everybody imagines a ski resort to look like. Perfect for the top of a chocolate box picture. Which is over shadowed by the Matterhorn.
Review by expert member ‘Zermatt Description’Known for its beautiful scenery and location in the Matter Valley on the Swiss and Italian border, Zematt offers a panorama of 33 4,000m peaks including the Matterhorn. With 394km of pistes there is skiing to suit everyone, but the majority of trails are suitable for intermediate skiers and there is limited choice for beginners. Zermatt also has ski and snowboarding schools. The resort is also known for it’s quality restaurants, international night life and car free town (they have electric taxis.). Zermatt offers a huge variety of snowsports including cross country skiing, off piste skiing, heliskiing, curling, ice skating, glacier skiing, tobogganing, sledding, ice climbing, ice hockey and dog sled rides.
Review by editor ‘Zermatt’With a variety of ski areas, including the world-famous Matterhorn, Zermatt possesses an extensive array of high altitude skiing, making it a fantastic resort for expert and intermediate skiers. The option of heli-skiing provides further appeal for advanced skiers, though with easy runs a scarcity, beginners would be better off learning elsewhere. The mountain restaurants in Zermatt are second to none, with the majority of the huge selection of restaurants both atmospheric and offering great food. The dazzling scenery add to the lunchtime experience, though such views aren't specific to the restaurants, with stunning backdrops on offer all around the resort, helping to soften the blow of having to navigate between the various ski areas. Although pedestrianised, electric taxis are granted access to the centre of Zermatt, spoiling the would-be tranquility. However, all this comes at a price, with the pricey shops reflecting the vastly affluent clientele, whilst the left pass is the most expensive in Europe, though it is a holiday worth saving for.
Review by expert member ‘A Rail Ski Safari in Switzerland’By Daniel Elkan for The Guardian. First published Saturday, 27th September 2008.
...Through the huge windows of the Glacier Express we were treated to the spectacle of a snowy St Gotthard valley, which runs from Zermatt to Andermatt. For an hour, cross-country skiers glided along a path next to the track.
Within an hour of reaching Andermatt, we were ascending Gemsstock mountain in the only cable car to access a phenomenal off-piste area.
Next, Disentis, an hour down the line but a very different region of Switzerland, where people speak a Romanche dialect, not German. Disentis is presided over by a Benedictine monastery, its cream walls glowing pink in the late afternoon sun... See the full article in The Guardian, 27th September 2008 Review by press.
