Simple, secluded apartments with taverna, tennis court and beach, on a tiny island off the coast near Elounda The northern Gulf of Mirabello is one of the most picturesque and the most tastefully developed stretches of coast on Crete. Near Elounda is a tiny island connected to the 'mainland' by an old stone bridge. It's called kolokytha which means 'marrow', presumably because of its shape, but in Minoan times it was the site of a bustling port called Olous, and you can still see traces of the stonework beneath the surface of the clear blue sea. On this islet there is just one building – and there probably won't ever be more, given the strict planning laws which came into force after it was finished in the 1970's. It's a cluster of 10 interconnected apartments in classic Greek style: cubist, white-washed and stylishly simple, with paved patios, flower-filled gardens, brown shutters and olive and carob trees for shade. It sits 100m from the bridge, with a small sandy beach in front which is safe for children, with a private tennis court nearby. Not only is it family-friendly, it’s also family-run, so you can be sure of a particularly warm welcome (even by Cretan standards) from the charming, English-speaking Kiki and Ilias Alexopoulos. All in all it makes a delightful, friendly base for an undemanding family or couple wanting to relax by the sea and explore some of eastern Crete, without spending the kind of money demanded by other Elounda hotels. read more and book at i-escape
