Belize is a new and exciting venue for sailing experiences, offering a rare opportunity to mix sailing charters with eco-tourism and archaeological adventure. Here you can escape the busy tourist hot spots of the Caribbean for the unspoilt, remote and truly remarkable.

Situated in the far Western Caribbean on the gulf of Honduras, Belize provides nearly 200 miles of protected barrier reef (a World Heritage Site) and hundreds of tiny islands, many of which are uninhabited.

The main ports for charters are Ambergris Bay and Palencia Village. Sailing in Belize is of the most adventurous in the world and not for the inexperienced. There are few man-made navigation aids and strict fines for irresponsible anchoring which may damage the reefs.

Shallower water, an emphasis on ecological protection and less developed ports mean that most sailing yachts in the area will not exceed 50 ft and this is not a destination offering a luxury class of charter. The 3000 square miles of cruising grounds instead are best for hosting freedom-seeking adventurers.

The dependable North-Easterly trade winds hold throughout the year but seasonal and geographic weather areas should be checked due to variations; there will always be very good sailing conditions however at any one time of the year at differing locations.

Sailors with an interest in eco-tourism will find it difficult to top Belize for attractions. See colonies of manatees at Gales Point Manatee and spot up to 60 ft long whale sharks at Gladden Spit until 10 days after the full moon from March through June. Shark Ray Alley on Ambergris Caye lets visitors swim with (friendly) sharks and rays and Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary boasts some of the best birding in the country. Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve are also amongst best ranked visitor destinations.

With over 70 types of coral reef and 400 species of fish, Belize is also superb for snorkelling and diving. At times the visibility under water can reach up to 100 feet. The world famous Blue Hole is only one of dozens of incredible dive spots.

Belize also offers fishing trips with many companies taking visitors out for big game fishing. From the shallower waters of the reefs out to the deep, there is opportunity for impressive catch including marlin, barracuda and sailfish. On mainland, visitors can discover the ancient Mayan ruins throughout the country, such as those at Camanai, surrounded by thick jungle. Belize's greatest Maya site, located at Caracol and over 3000 years old, is one of the world's most important archaeological gems.
