This part of Kenya is burnt to an amber colour, flat plains of grasslands in red soil rimmed by granite tors rising to whole ranges. But the brown Uaso Nyiro River cutting across the landscape offers a reprieve for plants and animals alike and giraffes, antelope, zebra, elephants and a cacophony of birds bring this place to life. Lions, cheetahs and leopards are never far away from this much prey and hold up on the plains waiting amongst the granite in pockets of green for the right moment. The lodges and three game reserves all perch on the rivers sandy banks. This proximity means animals are used to the traffic, good in that they’re slow to startle, bad in that it can mean you won’t have to place to yourself. Joy Adamson, author of ‘Born Free’ wrote her last book in the least visited local reserve, Shaba. The traditional owners of this land, cousins of the Massai, are nomadic farmers and remain a strong presence in the area outside of the reserves where they are forbidden to hunt or graze their cattle and camels.
