Situated in south-central New Mexico, west of Alamogordo, are the world's largest dune fields of gypsum sand. The brilliant white sand dunes cover an area of nearly 230 square miles and many dunes rise to 60 feet. True sand dunes, as contrasted to beach sand which comes from many parts of the ocean floor, are places of a single energetic quality or frequency. Gypsum sand is from the mineral Selenite and there is nowhere else on the entire earth with the feeling of White Sands.
The dunes were once a fabled site for vision quests of native Indians from throughout the region of what is now the southwest United States and northern Mexico. The earth energies here promote an expansive sense of calmness, a childlike joy in the heart, and clarity in seeing one’s life purpose. The best times to visit White Sands are on weekdays during the autumn, winter or spring. At these times, there will be few tourists compared to the numbers that come during the summer months. Additionally, the winter light is absolutely beautiful on the shimmering sands. When visiting White Sands, take time to wander far out upon the dunes and spend hours playing and lying on the sand. For an even more magical experience, spend a full-moon night sleeping on the soft sands. The dunes also seem to attract visitors from very far away. While National Park and government officials will resolutely deny their existence, many hundreds of UFO's have been sighted at White Sands during the past 30 years.
