The Hudson flows through New York, separating Manhattan Island from New Jersey and was an important factor in the city's early growth. New settlers jostled to develop the land around the river, spreading along rather than further inland.
The Hudson was first explored by Henry Hudson in 1609. Its route begins flowing out of romantically named Lake Tear of the Clouds and finishes in the Atlantic Ocean past Manhattan Island in New York Bay.
