The Euphrates and its neighbour, the Tigris River, fed and watered the ancient Mesopotamian civilisations and there are many valuable archaeological sites along their banks stretching through Turkey into Iraq. It’s a wide but shallow river and upstream it is broken up by a myriad of shoals and rapids so it can only be navigated in very small, shallow crafts. Several large channels have also been built along the river to provide more easily navigated trade routes. The river once split into marsh land around the city of Basra; however this area was dredged by Saddam Hussein’s government. Use of the river, through irrigation, damming and hydroelectricity plants is fiercely contended by the surrounding countries. The Euphrates and the Tigris merge in southern Iraq before emptying into the Persian Gulf.
