Starting in the Pamir Mountains and flowing into the Aral Sea, the Amu Darya is thought to be one of the four rivers named in the “Book of Revelations” as flowing from the Garden of Eden.
Irrigation use of the Amu Darya and increasing temperatures have caused the Aral Sea to retreat over recent decades.
