The Komi Forests are the largest remaining virgin forests in Europe. The main tree species are the Siberian Spruce, Fir and Larch matching the cold climate on the tundra and mountain tundra of the Northern Ural Range, and the major animal populations are of sable, mink and reindeer. Now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, there is gold under them there hills and still corporations lobbying for permission to extract it. UNESCO Information on the Virgin Komi Forests
