The Bird's Head

See more Rainforests and Jungles. See best of Papua New Guinea

A superb mix of jungle, high mountains, reef-clad island groups, and turtle beaches—the Bird’s Head is New Guinea’s most remarkable region for the adventurous jungle trekker. Hike into the Arfak Mountains, readily accessible from Manokwari, or boat out and dive the Raja Ampat Islands, off Sorong. The most important Leatherback Turtle nesting beach in the South Pacific can be found at Jamursba Medi, on the north coast of the Bird’s Head. Bird of paradise, great diving, and an interesting mix of cultures makes the Bird’s Head an important destination for the adventurous trekker.
