The boundaries of Sapo National Park enclose 1,800 square kilometres of the world’s best preserved regions of lowland Guinean rainforest, one of the most biologically diverse kinds of rainforest Sapo is also Liberia’s only National Park. Some of the unique animals who make their homes in Sapo include the Liberian Red Monkey, Black Diana Monkey, Zebra Antelope, African Elephants, Pygmy Hippos, Giant Pangolin, Duikers, Leopards and several kinds of Chimpanzee and there are an estimated 120 species of mammal, 590 species of bird and 80 types of reptile/ amphibian. Violence in Liberia has played a part in protecting this region of wilderness, as though some people were driven to living in the park the countries infrastructure was so damaged by the fighting that not much construction, the enemy of many African forests, took place. The squatters have now been driven out but there are still people inhabiting the park, many who are looking for mineral treasures, who threaten the survival of some of the parks exotic creatures through hunting and the rainforest itself with their mining.
