Okapi Wildlife Reserve

See more Rainforests and Jungles. See best of DR Congo

Located in the Ituri forest, the Okapi Wildlife Reserve is home to an estimated 5,000 of the remaining 30,000 Okapi animals, which have a velvety coat and somewhat resemble the shape of a horse, but are actually related to giraffes. The reserve was created in 1992 in hopes of protecting okapis, as well as other exotic and endangered animals such as the forest elephant and several different species of anthropoid primates.

The reserve has more to offer than just its interesting animals. Beautiful waterfalls on the Ituri and Epulu rivers and many other scenic treasures adorn the Reserve, which is also home to nomadic tribes such as the Mbuti and Efe.

In 1997, the Okapi Wildlife Reserve was included on the World Heritage in Danger list. Deforestation and commercial hunting is hurting the reserve, but many conservation acts can be found to help out the okapis and other wildlife beauties in this area.
