Another excellent rafting river in Queensland, the North Johnstone River, like the Tully River takes paddlers through one of the world’s most beautiful rainforest regions, the ancient Daintree. One of the guide books on rafting the river will tell you that some of the trees you pass on your journey will be more than one or two thousand years old. Your journey on the North Johnstone will take you past several sets of waterfalls and bring you close to crocodiles and other animals and some of the strange prehistoric plant species that still grow here. The less appealing friends you’ll make on the trip are the leeches, but just remember this is an adventure! This is best done as a longer trip as the exciting bits of white water are well spread out and a lot of paddling this river is about experiencing the remoteness and beauty of this environment rather than getting some quick thrills over the rapids (of which there are several class four of five sets: Black Ass Falls, Mordor, Champagne, Rooster Tail and the Berlin Wall being some of the names given to them.). In drought years the river can shrink to a trickle, but in a good year the volume is good, though it’s more a technical challenge than a big volume challenge. Best time would probably be in the Australian autumn (but it will still be warm - don’t worry.)
