‘The Premier Alpine Whitewater River’The Middle Fork of the Salmon has everything you'd want in a river trip: fun rapids, stunning scenery, hot springs, great hiking, history, geology, clear water, and wildlife. This is America's premier whitewater river.
The Middle Fork (it is known simply as the Middle Fork among rafters) flows 100 miles through the heart of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. This is the biggest wilderness area in the lower 48 states. It starts in a dense forest of lodgepole pines and travels through an area of pink granite before entering the Impassable Canyon, which is only accessible by boat.
The rapids are mostly Class III, but this river is special because the whitewater is almost always continuous Class I and II so you'll never get bored. If you want extreme whitewater, go in late May or early June when the peak snowmelt is occuring and the river is Class IV and V. If you want a fun adventure that you can take your family on, try July or August when the water is lower and you can take inflatable kayaks.
This is one of the best managed rivers in the country and the Forest Service requires private permits. The lottery for permits occurs in January of every year and is very competitive. There are also many commercial outfitters that offer trips down the Middle Fork.
For more information, call ECHO River Trips at (800) 652-3246 or for a list of outfitters, visit Middle Fork Salmon Information.

Review by expert member ‘Best 100 miles of downhill camping around’The Middle Fork is sometimes called “the best 100 miles of downhill camping around.” Starting in the high pine forest of central Idaho, the crystal clear snowmelt river tumbles downstream in a series of cascading class III rapids. Featuring a world class catch and release trout fishery, natural hot springs, and evidence of 10,000 years of human history, the Middle Fork has something for everyone. In the spring and early summer be ready for stomping, continuous white-water, later in the summer be prepared to get your boat stuck in the shallows.
