Franklin River Paddling
See more Rafting. See best of Tasmania in Australia.

The Franklin River is one of the world greatest wilderness rivers and holds a legendary status among Australians, thanks to the epic environmental battle to save the river from damming during the 1980's. Thankfully the battle was successful and the 120km of pristine whitewater has been preserved in a World Heritage listed National Park. The Franklin River offers a wide range of paddling, from steep technical creek style through to big volume - and you can get it all on the same day depending on the river levels. The rapids typically are grade 3-4 however there are grade 6s requiring portages. Typically most rafters take 9 days to raft the full length of the river. An Australian company, World Expeditions pioneered the first commercial raft descent in 1978 and are still operating trips today: www.worldexpeditions.com
