November is the time to enjoy the brilliant colors of the momiji (Japanese maple trees) in the forests, parks, and temple gardens throughout Japan. Kyoto's temples and surrounds are especially well known for autumn colors but there are many other areas as well. Taking a stroll or having a picnic under the blazing autumn colors is a Japanese tradition much like the similar custom of sakura viewing in spring.
