Although less well-known than New York City’s Central Park on the Eastern coast, San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park is much bigger being 3 miles long and ½ mile wide and is the third most-visited city park in the United States. It caters for many tastes with a large children’s play area, lawn bowling, a beach chalet and a conservatory of flowers. One of the most popular parts of the park is the Japanese Tea Gardens. The park also boasts a Dutch windmill and a less well-known herd of bison that have been captive in the park since 1892. The park is home to many man-made lakes, the largest being Stow Lake which features the majestic Huntington Falls, and another, Spreckels Lake, which is home to a model yacht club. Boats, bikes and rollerblades are available for hire if you are after a more active excursion. The park also provides free musical concerts at the Temple of Music every Sunday between April and October and is home to the famous Strictly Bluegrass Festival which occurs in October. There is also an AIDs memorial grove, which is the only national memorial of this type in the USA. This is a very safe area of San Francisco and is particularly favoured by family groups and couples.
