New Orleans City Park at 1300 acres is one of the ten biggest urban parks in the United States. This park was severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina; at one point 90% of the park was underwater, but it is slowly recovering from this devastation. The park has a large art museum as well as a number of lakes, including one with paddle boats for hire. There also many sporting facilities, including three golf courses, tennis court, a high school football stadium, 400metre track and stables that offer horse-riding lessons, as well as many cycling and running routes throughout the park. The park is especially popular with families because of the variety of facilities available for children, there are numerous picnic benches, an amusement park featuring a 100 year-old carousel and a children’s centre, which houses ‘Storyland’, a fairy-tale themed park with 26 exhibits. New Orleans is a very safe city and there is a higher police-citizen ratio now than before Hurricane Katrina, but it is still best to enjoy the park during the day rather than at night.
