On 10th June, 1912, the population of the flourishing Iowa town of Villisca were plunged into sudden terror when a couple and their four children, and two visiting children, were found dead in their beds - hacked to death by an unknown assailant, whose axe was discovered near the mutilated bodies of the two young guests. A number of suspects were identified and although one was tried, no conclusion was reached and the mystery remains unsolved to this day. The house is owned by the Linns, who have restored it as faithfully as possible to the condition it would have been in on the night of the murders. It is open to visitors, and overnight paranormal investigations are regularly carried out there, but it is not occupied. Strange odours, disembodied voices, hovering mists and photographic anomalies are said to have been recorded there, and many visitors claim to have been touched or overcome by strong emotions whist exploring the house. A number of photographs have also been taken which are said to prove the presence of shadowy figures in some of the rooms, and many visitors claim to have experienced similar visitations.
