The ghost of Disreali at Hughenden

See more Paranormal. See best of Cotswolds in United Kingdom.

This red brick castle/ Georgian manor house cross was home to Benjamin Disraeli, and still contains his effects and personal belongings, among them cherished, carefully selected gifts from Queen Victoria.

Disraeli and his wife both died here and were buried in a vault under the chapel. Soon after his death in 1881 stories about Disreali’s spirit refusing to leave the grounds began to circulate. In most stories he appears as a spectral image of himself, always still and watchful, appearing behind you, giving the feeling you’re being watched, then when you turn you glimpse something fading. His favoured spot to appear seems to be at the foot of the main staircase while you’re looking at his paintings, including one specially commissioned by Queen Victoria copied from one of her own which he much admired. Members of The Ghost Club have reported several sightings which they have reported in detail, so there is much evidence to go on in this case. These records show he is most often visible to women, which may have something to do with the charms he was reported to have in life, tying in with these only one member of the current staff has ever reported any paranormal activity and she’s a woman. Though she hasn’t seen anything she occasionally and mysteriously smells pomade in one of the rooms above the staircase.

The gardens are an attractive replication of the colourful originals. The garden is open all year but the house is only open for part.
