The Gay Ghost of The George Hotel.

See more Paranormal. See best of East Anglia in United Kingdom.

I was asked to investigate The George Hotel, in North Norfolk by ‘Paranormal Norfolk’, a regional magazine dedicated to all things spooky. Paul Hanrahan; the television Ghost Detective, who also writes a column for them was to be involved and we were looking for a famous ghost known as The Green Lady. I have known Paul for some time and worked with him before so our team was looking forward to seeing him again and getting to grips with a famous ghost.

Little did we know we were about to make history in the paranormal world.

Located in the historic market town of Swaffham this three star hotel is an ideal base to explore the beautiful North Norfolk coast including Sandringham and Walsingham. If you’re in the area you may enjoy lunch or dinner in the superb Green Room restaurant offering local and international cuisine or afternoon tea in the lounge. On a Saturday there is the hustle and bustle of the traditional local market directly opposite the hotel which has been held in the same place for over three hundred years.

We approached the investigation from two angles, scientifically and Spiritually.

Using EMF meters and laser thermometers we obtained readings that didn’t relate to known locations of electrical wiring and water pipes, which usually give higher readings because of the electromagnetic energy they give off. In some rooms the EMF readings went off the scale for no apparent reason, not necessarily a sign of ghosts but cause for further investigation. Cold spots were also picked up with the laser thermometers.

We set our Mediums up in these areas on a vigil with the camcorder on night vision and picked up a number of light anomalies we couldn’t explain away as insects or dust. They picked up a couple of names which also came through when we tried a glass moving experiment.

It appears that one Spirit; who has been known to throw glasses off the shelves behind the bar, used to work at the hotel in the 1950s and now comes in visitation because he is waiting for a former sweetheart who worked there with him and is still alive.

We also picked up on a former maid who fell down the main staircase and broke her arm; many of us experienced some pain in our arms on the stairs.

The Green Lady was not in evidence although the Mediums did sense some energy in the area she has been seen. It wasn’t until our subsequent public investigation that she appeared to a guest in room 204 and something pinned down a guest to her bed in room 206, we have still to identify who or what that was.

However it was in the hotels dry store room that much of the paranormal activity took place. Our Mediums correctly identified that there was once a door that linked it to the former bakery; used when the hotel used to bake all its own bread (now used as the laundry) and picked up a strong female energy.

This aggressive energy seemed agitated that the long hair of our female Medium was not tied up and kept touching it, when it was held up the energy backed off. Our male Medium felt something tug at the belt on his trousers, which perturbed him a little.

It was at breakfast the next morning that all became clear.

Our presence at the hotel had caused quite a stir among the staff. The young waiters and waitresses were excited by our visit and buzzed around us asking questions.

One of the young male waiters came to us and said that when he was in the dry store he felt that something unseen was trying to undo the zip on his trousers, which needless to say freaked him out somewhat.

We explained that we had felt an aggressive female energy in there linked to the former bakery. They then brought to our table an old sepia photograph taken in the bakery years ago showing former staff members.

Glancing at the picture one of our Mediums pointed to a figure and exclaimed, “That’s her!” meaning the female energy picked up in the dry store room. A stunned silence fell as we all looked at the picture and realised it wasn’t a ‘her’ at all, it was a ‘him’. “He was gay!” we chorused.

Forget the Green Lady, we had discovered the Gay Ghost of The George Hotel.
