The A three-month period of paranormal activity is said to have been inflicted on Monsieur de X and his family (anonymous in what are believed to be his own documentations of the events), who inherited Calvados Castle in 1865.
Built on the ruins of an unidentified earlier building, the castle is said to have afforded its owners and their servants an unusually vigorous and persistent experience of poltergeist activity. Heavy objects could be heard being dragged up and down the stairs, a creature which sounded as though it was walking on stumps seemed to move about the building, bedroom doors were hammered upon, bolts unlocked by unseen hands and shrieks of despair and the moving of objects occurred in the 'Green Room'.
At the peak of the haunting, as it was recorded, the ghost played the locked organ, knocked over furniture and sent water rushing down the chimney, scattering the lit coals in the face of the children's tutor.
An exorcism is said to have calmed the activity temporarily, but that it returned on the priest's departure, and the family moved soon afterwards.
Monsieur X's journal was published in the Annales des Sciences Psychiques in 1893.
