Edgar Allan Poe once scraped his initials into a window frame at what was once named the William Penn Inn, and George Washington, William Penn and General Anthony Wayne all stayed here on their way through Merion. The building dates back to 1704 and is the focus of many stories, both of visits by famous people and of ghostly manifestations. It was renamed after "Mad" Anthony Wayne, a brigadier general of the US Army whose bravery and reckless edge led him to many military victories in the American Revolutionary War. The Inn's cellar is said to be haunted by the spirit of a Hessian soldier, who hid there to escape persecution, became trapped and eventually died. His shade is said to sometimes hammer frantically on the door leading out of the cellar. Poltergeist activity is attached to a chandelier which hangs on the second floor, and the ghost of a serving girl said to have been raped and strangled by a guest at the inn is believed to linger here. The building is currently being restored.
