Dragsholm Slot (meaning 'castle' in Danish) was built in the Renaissance style under the instruction of the Bishop of Roskilde in the twelfth century. It was intended to function as a fortress against naval attacks, but was reconstructed as a French baroque-style castle in the late seventeenth century, with crisp white walls and large windows, and has since been occupied by several royal and noble families. It now functions as a luxury hotel and restaurant, each room equipped with an outline of its own history - some decidedly spookier than others. Dragsholm's most famous ghost is that of the 4th Earl of Bothwell, who was married to Mary, Queen of Scots. He died there in 1578 after a long imprisonment in the dungeons, the result of the revenge of a Norwegian noblewoman to whom he had once been engaged. The sound of his carriage and horses is sometimes said to be heard in the courtyard outside. The castle's ghostly white lady, whom many visitors and staff claim to have seen walking the corridors at night, is said to have been the daughter of a cruel nobleman who once owned the castle. The story states that he was overcome with rage when he learned of her passionate affair with a poor young man who worked in the castle and rather than allow her to run away with him, he made his servants imprison her inside one of the castle walls, where she eventually died. A skeleton clothed in fragments of a white dress is said to have been discovered in one of the castle's walls in the 1930s - a story which seems to verify the tale. Dragsholm also has a grey lady - one of less noble blood, but with a far less gruesome story. Her spirit is said to visit the castle every night to check that its inhabitants are safe and warn them of any danger, in thanks for the treatment she received at Dragsholm for toothache when she worked there as a maid when alive.
