Avebury Stones (and the Red Lion Pub)

Avebury lies at the heart of England's most ancient and mysterious region. Records of human activity here date back thousands of years and the huge Avebury stones are believed to be Neolithic in origin, placed in their inscrutably significant positions some time around 2500BC.
Lay lines, crop circles and alien sightings seem to flourish here as if fed by some unidentified source of energy, and though scientists have explained away anything lacking in physical evidence as being caused by infrasound, reports of ghostly goings on here continue to emerge.
The Red Lion pub, situated at the centre of Avebury, is based on an even older structure than the stones themselves. The ghost of a murdered landlady is said to touch visitors and generate mild poltergeist activity, a stabbing victim is said to haunt the cellar, and his ghostly killer has come back to threaten customers with a knife.
Most famously, however, a photograph of an alleged ghost was published in 2004, and its veracity has never been disproved.
Much earlier, the spirits of the standing stones were said to have taken revenge on villagers who began toppling them in the name of Christianity, by collapsing and crushing them, or causing them to be struck by lightning.
People still report hearing voices talking and singing and seeing ghostly figures lingering around the stones at night.
